The Hollow at Peahi

Peahi — Jaws — is where the Pacific shows what it is really capable of. On a big northwest swell, this reef produces some of the largest rideable waves on the planet, and the hollow barrels it throws are the stuff of legend. I shot this from the cliffs, watching set after set detonate on the reef, waiting for the one wave that stood up perfectly hollow with the light pouring through it.

This is big-wave Hawaii at its most dramatic — a thick, hollow barrel at one of the most famous breaks on earth. The scale of Peahi does not translate until you see it like this: a moving mountain of water, carved hollow by the reef.
