The Potter's angelfish is found only in Hawaii — one of our endemic reef fish, and one of the prettiest. That deep blue body fading to burnt orange is unmistakable once you know it. They are shy little fish, darting into the coral at the first sign of a diver, so getting a clean portrait takes patience and a slow approach. This one finally held still long enough, hovering over the reef like it was posing.
It is a Hawaiian original — a fish you literally cannot see anywhere else in the world, captured in sharp detail against the reef it calls home.
Endemic to Hawaii: Found nowhere else on earth — a true island exclusive.
Living Color: That blue-to-orange gradient is even more vivid in person.
A Patient Portrait: These fish spook easily; this frame took a slow, quiet approach.
